Keeping Your Newborn Baby Warm In winter

It is starting to get a little more frosty as we move closer to Christmas and the winter months. We all need to wrap up warm to keep ourselves safe and healthy over the festive season, but if you recently welcomed a new addition to your family, you may well be wondering about the best ways of keeping your newborn baby warm in winter.

While your first impulse will be to wrap a newborn up in multiple layers, like we do as adults, it is much more important to focus on keeping their body temperature stable (and this applies all year round). This is because babies cannot regulate their temperature as well as we can. A newborn will lose heat much quicker than an adult as they have hardly any body fat, so they have to use energy to stay warm instead. That energy really needs to be reserved for their growth and development, so as parents, we have to help them maintain a stable temperature no matter the weather.

At the same time, overheating poses its own risks, such as SIDS. This is why you need to ensure the materials you use for your newborn’s clothing are warm but breathable. With breathable fabrics, heat can be released when necessary and this will prevent your baby from overheating. Here are a few of our favourites for keeping babies warm and safe:

Blankets

Blankets are the perfect way to warm up and they can be removed easily to prevent overheating. One of our favourites for babies is this beautiful pom pom blanket. The gorgeous faux fur pom poms are fun and tactile, encouraging sensory play and development. They can also be detached when you wash the blanket so they don’t get damaged.

The blanket itself is made from 100% brushed cotton, which is incredibly soft on delicate skin. Cotton is ideal for newborns as it will keep them warm, but remains completely breathable.

Mittens

Babies have adorable tiny hands and fingers that need protecting when you brace the cold and leave your home. The best way to keep them warm is with a pair of durable and cosy mittens. We are particularly fond of this collection of mittens.

Every pair is lined and made from 100% sheepskin. This is soft to the touch and will keep their hands deliciously warm. They are also remarkably sturdy, so you should be able to get a lot of wear out of them. Each pair has a handy string to keep them together. This makes it much easier to keep track of them so your little one won’t lose their new cute mittens!

Cardigans

Cardigans are one of the most adaptable pieces of baby clothing. You can take them on and off whenever you need, which is great for a bit of extra warmth and also for keeping them clean. This button up cardigan is absolutely adorable. You can keep it loose when they warm up, or button it up for some extra comfort.

Bodysuits

Bodysuits are an absolute must for any newborn. They offer warmth to the entire body and have easy poppers for when it is time for a nappy change. This 3 pack comes in a range of colours to be matched with multiple outfits. They are made from super soft combed cotton as well to keep baby warm and comfortable.
